Tight MIP formulations for bounded up/down times and interval-dependent start-ups

چکیده
Switching machines on and off is an important aspect of unit commitment problems and production planning problems, among others. Here we study tight mixed integer programming formulations for two aspects of such problems: bounded length onand off-intervals, and interval-dependent start-ups. For the problem with both these aspects we develop a tight (convex hull) formulation involving additional variables. For the bounded interval problem we present a tight network dual formulation based on new integer variables that allows us to simultaneously treat lower and upper bounds on the interval lengths. This in turn leads to more general results, including simpler proofs of known tight formulations for problems with just lower bounds. For the interval-dependent start-up problem we develop a path formulation that allows us to describe the convex hull of solutions in the space of machine-on and interval-dependent start-up variables.

A tight MIP formulation of the unit commitment problem with start-up and shut-down constraints
This paper provides the convex hull description for the following basic operating constraints of a single power generation unit in Unit Commitment (UC) problems: 1) generation limits, 2) startup and shutdown capabilities, and 3) minimum up and down times. Although the model does not consider some crucial constraints, such as ramping, the proposed constraints can be used as the core of any UC fo...
متن کاملTight MIP formulations of the power-based unit commitment problem
This paper provides the convex hull description for the basic operation of slowand quick-start units in power-based unit commitment (UC) problems. The basic operating constraints that are modeled for both types of units are (1) generation limits and (2) minimum up and down times. Apart from this, the startup and shutdown processes are also modeled, using (3) startup and shutdown power trajector...
متن کاملA Hybrid Business Success Versus Failure Classification Prediction Model: A Case of Iranian Accelerated Start-ups
The purpose of this study is to reduce the uncertainty of early stage startups success prediction and filling the gap of previous studies in the field, by identifying and evaluating the success variables and developing a novel business success failure (S/F) data mining classification prediction model for Iranian start-ups. For this purpose, the paper is seeking to extend Bill Gross and Robert L...
متن کاملA New Approach for Stress State - Dependent Flow Localization Failure Bounded Through Ductile Damage in Dynamically Loaded Sheets
In this paper, a new approach is proposed for stress state - dependent flow localization in bifurcation failure model bounded through ductile damage in dynamically loaded sheets. Onset of localized necking is considered in phenomenological way for different strain rates to draw the forming limit diagram (FLD). Using a strain metal hardening exponent in the Vertex theory related to the strain ra...
متن کاملMaking sense of corporate venture capital.
Large companies have long sensed the potential value of investing in external start-ups, but more often than not, they fail to get it right. Remember the dash to invest in new ventures in the late 1990s and the hasty retreat when the economy turned? This article presents a framework that will help a company decide whether it should invest in a particular start-up by first understanding what kin...
